50,000 Burmese Easy-to-Read™ New Testaments

World Bible Translation Center (WBTC) will be printing and distributing over 50,000 Burmese (Myanmar language) Easy-to-Read™ New Testaments in the next few months. Working with a mission printing organization in Sri Lanka and a major literature distribution team in Thailand, WBTC hopes to flood this devastated nation with the light of God’s Word.

At this time, requests have come in for over 500,000 copies of the Scriptures and the initial number will grow as God provides opportunities. These New Testaments will be printed and shipped from Sri Lanka,  gathered at a staging area in Bangkok, Thailand, enter Myanmar at Yangon (Myanmar’s capital), and then fan out all over the country for free distribution. Many church leaders and congregations have made pleas for copies of God’s Word. Even Buddhist monks are asking for Scriptures to help them cope with this national tragedy. Credible reports of many Buddhists turning to Christ only underscore the need for more Scriptures.

One of WBTC’s distribution partners in the country says the following about the need for an easy-to-read translation: “I personally feel that the Scriptures need to be readable by the masses of people who may or may not understand high language.” Currently, WBTC has only a complete New Testament while a team of translators works to finish the Bible. According to Brian McLemore, WBTC’s Vice President of Translations, “This great loss of human life only reinforces our desire and sense of urgency to complete the Bible.”
